Mammoth Heritage Cave found in Vietnam

The cave in the Annamite Mountains contains a river and jungle (its name translates to "mountain river cave") and even its own thin clouds, and its end remains out of sight. It's part of a network of about 150 caves in central Vietnam near the Thai–Laotian Border.

An excerpt from the article of National Geographic reveals more about the massive cavern:

“An enormous shaft of sunlight plunges into the cave like a waterfall. The hole in the ceiling through which the light cascades is unbelievably large, at least 300 feet across. The light, penetrating deep into the cave, reveals for the first time the mind-blowing proportions of Hang Son Doong. The passage is perhaps 300 feet wide, theceiling nearly 800 feet tall: room enough for an entire New York City block of 40-story buildings. There are actually wispy clouds up near theceiling.”

Thunder upset Mavs to tie series at 1-1

DALLAS – (UPDATE) The Oklahoma City Thunder, getting a tremendous boost from their bench, beat the Dallas Mavericks 106-100 to level the best-of-seven Western Conference Finals at 1-1 on Thursday.
Kevin Durant, the NBA scoring leader the last two years, scored 24 points to lead the Thunder in scoring but was supported by a mighty effort from the reserves topped by guard James Harden's 23 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
"We have a lot of confidence in James," said Thunder coach Scott Brooks. "He made plays. He made big basketball plays. He's a spot up shooter, he's a penetrator, he's a playmaker. He's a tremendous player."
The Oklahoma back-ups, outscored by 31 points by Maverick reserves in Game One, manned the floor throughout the fourth quarter alongside Durant and combined to score 50 points in the game.
Harden gave Oklahoma City the lead going into the final period by producing a four-point play at the end of the third quarter when the guard drained a three-pointer and was fouled in the process. After sinking the free throw, the Thunder led 77-76.
A long jumper by Harden padded the lead to 102-92 with 3:15 left, and Oklahoma City withstood a furious fightback led by Dirk Nowitzki, who had been quieted by some heavy double-team defensive pressure following his Game One eruption for 48 points.
Nowitzki, the 7-foot German jump shooter, scored 16 fourth-quarter points to finish with 29.
"They wanted it more and came out swinging," said Nowitzki after Dallas lost their first home playoff game of this postseason.
Said Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle: "They attacked us, got us back on our heels. I don't remember a game we've won giving up 56 percent shooting. Give them credit. They played an attacking, desperate game. Their bench was dominant."
The Mavericks led by as many as 11 points in the first quarter before Durant changed the momentum with a thunderous, rim-rattling dunk over Dallas center Brendan Hayward.
Oklahoma City finished the first quarter trailing 31-26 and surged into a 59-57 at the intermission.
Durant praised the work of the reserves.
"We had a good chemistry going and the coach made a great decision to stick with it," Durant told reporters. "They really won the game tonight."
Brooks sat talented starting guard Russell Westbrook, who had scored 18 points, for the entire fourth quarter after he made a turnover at the end of the third quarter and a foul and then fumed on the bench.
Eric Maynor took over for Westbrook and finished with 13 points. "I thought Eric did a good job," said coach Brooks.
"Russell is an incredible player, our starting point guard. It was his time to come out and I stuck with Eric. He did a great job handling the decisions on the court."
The series now shifts to Oklahoma City for Game Three on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

Kris confirms Bimby's talk with PNoy's date

MANILA, Philippines - Actress-host Kris Aquino finally broke her silence on the latest report that her only brother, President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, is dating a new girl.
In her official Twitter page, Kris admitted that her youngest son James Yap Jr. (a.k.a. Bimby or Baby James) asked his uncle's recent date identified as Bunny Calica, if she is the President's girlfriend.
Calica, a 27-year-old teacher, was seen with the President during the reunion concert of the Hotdog band on Monday night (May 16) at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Makati City.
"I read Inquirer's front page--won't deny bimby's comments to his tito Noy--his yaya heard him & was trying to keep him quiet. I've kept my promise--totally been silent about my kuya's love life," Kris said.
Kris admitted that she hasn’t seen the girl but her children, Baby James (Bimby) and Joshua, had the chance to meet her.
The "Pilipinas Got Talent" host also said it would be easy for her brother's newest date to be her friend, since Calica is friendly with her sons.
"Honestly, I haven't met her, only josh & bimby have. Not that my opinion matters, but a woman who is friendly w/ my sons will find it easy to find a friend in me," Kris posted on Twitter.
Kris previously vowed to avoid commenting about her brother's love life, but the Inquirer said she was the one who identified Calica as the President's mystery date.

Ombudsman suspends Pichay over dubious bank deal

MANILA, Philippines - Acting Ombudsman Orlando Casimiro on Friday ordered the suspension of Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) Chairman Prospero Pichay in connection with the alleged violation of an administrative order concerning the agency’s exposure in a local bank.
In his order dated May 17, 2011, Casimiro  invoked Section 24 of Republic Act 6770 (The Ombudsman Act) and Section 9, Rule 3, Administrative Order 7, Rules of Procedure of the Office of the Ombudsman, and ordered Pichay’s 6 month suspension without pay. The order is immediately executory.
The same order asked the Office of the Executive Secretary to immediately implement the order and notify the Ombudsman of the implementation within 5 days.
Pichay was served the suspension today by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa’s office.
The suspension stems from a case filed by LWUA employees Rustico Tutol, Luis Estrada and Carmen Amores against Pichay, LWUA Acting Administrator Daniel Landingin, LWUA Acting Deputy Administrator for Investment and Financial Sevices Wilfredo Feleo and LWUA Corporate Legal Officer Arnaldo Espinas.
The case is for violation of the Republic Act 6713 (Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees) and Grave Misconduct.
The Ombudsman’s order dated May 17 however zeroed in on only Pinchay and made no mention of the other respondents.
Pichay’s camp plans to elevate the case to the Court of Appeals and seek a nullification of the suspension.
'Forum-shopping'
Pichay’s lawyer Freddie Villamor had no basis and was issued “blindly and hastily.” Villamor also feels there was forum-shopping in the case.
Villamor noted the suspension order comes after a similar motion for preventive suspension was denied twice by then-Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez. The 1st was in November 22, 2010 and the 2nd was in February 14, 2011 for weak evidence of guilt.
Villamor notes Casimiro’s order, which came after Gutierrez quit her post amid an impeachment trial, was “surprising and highly irregular.”
The case filed by the employees concerns the agency’s acquisition of 60% of shares in  ExpressBank, as well as the infusion of some P400 million into the bank as investment.
Villamor said after the first motion for suspension was denied, the complainants submitted a consolidated reply with a second motion for preventive suspension. In denying that second motion, Villamor says the Ombudsman ruled that the officials continued stay in office will not prejudice the case.
'No 2nd MR'

Villamor said the rules bar a 2nd motion for reconsideration. In which case, the proper recourse should have been to file an appeal before the Apellate Court or the High Court.
He believes Casimiro, as Gutierrez’ successor , has no power to reverse her decision.
“Kung mag-file ka pa ng another motion for preventive suspension, lalabas nang 2nd motion for reconsideration [ito]. Bawal [ito] sa rules of procedures dahil walang nagfile ng 2nd MR, which is prohibited at wala naming nag-akyat ng orders sa Court of Appeals or Supreme Court, to reverse [the decision]. Pagkaalam naming tapos na ang issue ng preventive suspension”
Villamor said nowhere does Casimiro refer to Gutierrez’ previous denials of the motions for preventive suspension in his order. “Maaring naiissue nang di nabasa ang records ng kaso. “
Villamor theorized that the Ombudsman’s turnaround may have something to do with an administrative case Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima filed against Pichay and the other agency officials for the same allegation this time before the Office of the President dated  April 6, 2011 -- almost 2 months after the 2nd motion for suspension was denied by the Ombudsman.
Villamor noted Casimiro’s order mentions an alleged violation of an administrative order that was not part of the earlier complaints for suspension.
Pichay’s camp sought to dismiss the complaint before Malacañang for forum shopping.
“All of the sudden lumabas itong May 17 order issued by Casimiro, this time granting preventive suspension supposedly being sought by complainants in a case Gutierrez twice  over denied.”
Casimiro 'pandering to Palace'
Pichay for his part remained defiant and accused Casimiro of pandering to Malacañang.
”Sagana ako sa order ng Ombudsman .  itong order ni Casimiro iligal at garapal. Illegal ang order palagay ko naman. Siguro sumsisipsip dahil gusto maging Ombudsman. As far as I'm concerned, the valid order was order not to suspend.”
When asked if he will continue to report to work, Pichay said, “As far as if papasok ako…hindi naman ako regular employee. I'll see if there’s next meeting. Titignan ko kung papasok ako.”
Pichay even twitted Malacañang for what he feels is harassment. “I’m an old hand in politics. I’m used to this. I just feel they are doing an amateur job. Dapat pag-igihin nila para walang loophole.”
He maintained he violated no law or rule, even the administrative order cited in his suspension. Pichay says that AO 59 does not apply to this case.
He said ExpressBank is a private institution. Nevertheless, he says he got then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s approval.
“Kami po hindi nagcreate o acquire. What we did is [to] invest in a private bank as advised by the BSP [Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas] since that’s not a government agency. 'Di naming kailangan ang Office of the President, yet we still asked for approval,” he said.
Pichay cited that the bank continues to make money, earning 31million in 2010 and 20 million as of April 2011. Pichay says the bank is being used to  help finance water districts.
So far he said the bank has extended loans to 12 water districts and 13,000  households.
“Kung naisip nila panggigipit , good luck sa inyo. Paglilingkod natin paano pababain ang bilihin,  matrikula; paano mapapababa presyo ng bilihin; ilang tao mabibigyan ng bahay.  If you look at records, during my incumbency nadoble na ang water districts. Nung pumasok tayo, 479 na water district; [ngayon] 860 na ang water district,” he said.

Internet fraudsters traced to Nigeria

MANILA, Philippines - An acceptance email to present their thesis. Their hearts soared. An all-expenses paid trip to London. Not only would they be fulfilled academically but they would also get to see the capital city in England, for free. This was above and beyond what they had been working for. This kind of opportunity usually took a few years of constant applications to come true. But there it was, in the email inbox, a matter of weeks after sending off the application.
Unfortunately, there are millions of people every day from across the globe receiving emails promising opportunity and financial gain. They prey on the dreams of others in the crudest way. One of the largest scamming phenomenons on the internet originated from Nigeria, West Africa. It is called the "419 scam" which, it is estimated, manages to con $100 million from Americans alone.
The fraudsters send out a huge volume of emails, normally with a pre-fix to their name like "Prince," or  "Chief" to create a false sense of security.  They will then claim that in order to release a huge amount of money that has come into their possession, they need to transfer it into the victim’s account. They also promise to hand over a cut of their windfall when the ordeal is over. Of course, once the victim has released their personal data, they will have been scammed out of their money and will never hear from the "affluent" character ever again.
Here in the Philippines, scammers exploit the Filipino’s high work drive and desire for success by offering fake business opportunities. About 11% of the entire Filipino population work abroad as domestic helpers, doctors, caregivers and so on. Each year, more than a million Pinoys strive to get work through overseas employment agencies. Con men soon worked out that these agencies were the prime place to find professional hopefuls looking for opportunity.
The Isle of Man scam
"Irene," (not her real name) sent the resumé of her husband, "Enrico", to a site called jobstreet.com. Jobstreet is Southeast Asia’s largest online employment company and has around 7 million registered job seekers. Jobstreet also provides a job-matching engine called LiNa, which matches registered hopefuls with positions that may be appropriate for them.
A few months after sending the resumé, Enrico received a job offer on the Isle of Man, a small island in the middle of the Irish Sea. Buoyed up with excitement with a new life and career in the British Isles seemingly within their grasp, they stopped for a moment to ask if it was too good to be true. After studying the email again, they discovered that it was, in fact, a scam, and had they parted with the requested $125 deposit, they would never have heard from the scammers again. They replied that Enrico’s father was of military background, and would track down the conmen in a light-hearted retaliation. Of course, it would not have been so light-hearted had they been robbed of their money. Assuming that Jobstreet itself was not into the con artist industry, it is possible that a hacker managed to access the personal files of the hopefuls registered on the site. Ron Tolentino, a Jobstreet employee, helpfully told me that "We are the only ones that can access the database, of course." When asked if complaints of scamming are common, he replied that, to his knowledge, there had only ever been "a handful. Around two."
Fake 'Island Garden Hotel'
Unfortunately, it seems that that figure is a tiny portion or the true number of people affected by false business proposals. In February this year, "Rick" (not his real name) and his team of 5 other students preparing a thesis about how climate change affects human health, had applied to present their findings at several conferences. Within a week, one had replied. It was an offer for a much sought after 30-minute presentation slot in London.
The group was overjoyed. Incredibly excited, they read over the email. Airfare, visas and accommodation all paid for. They had to carry out the very difficult task of selecting the required team number of 3 of them to go. They told their professors and excused themselves from class.
Then came the issue of the deposit. The "organizers" of the conference named "Climate Change Working Group 2011," had given them the name of the hotel, Island Garden Hotel, in a nice area of London. The website looked legitimate. The organizers had one condition, they needed P40,000 to put down a deposit for the room. Smelling a rat, Rick’s dad became involved in the process. He was suspicious as usually conferences cover all the expenses and don’t ask delegates to come forward with any kind of money.
Tracking the hotel website’s IP address, they traced it to Nigeria. This, of course, raises every warning flag, and all was devastatingly confirmed when they came across a very similar "acceptance" letter to the one which they received on a scam forum website. According to Rick, the letter did contain a few grammatical errors, ones which they overlooked in the excitement of the moment, but now realize should have been completely absent in a letter from an academic institute.
The websites for both the "Island Garden Hotel" (islandgardenhotel.com) and "Climate Change Working Group 2011," (ccwg11.com) now both telling come up with a blank page but for a sign reading "This site is under construction." The group of students later emailed the British embassy in Manila, but to no response. Disgruntled, they have not attempted to apply for any more overseas conferences but have since appeared in more local ones. Rick’s advice for future hopefuls? "Don’t get too excited. Usually conferences ask for papers a year in advance."
Preying on nurses
One particular professional field which scammers prey on is nursing. With over 200,000 people out of work in the Philippines due to lack of vacancies in hospitals, they try to go abroad to where their skills will be appreciated. So while there are many genuine agencies helping these nurses fulfill their potential in countries such as the USA, UK, and Canada, other organizations are less sincere.
There are a smattering which, though not technically being untruthful, are dishonest in their actions and offer an English language improvement scheme for Pinoy nurses heading to New Zealand. After selling all they have to get onto the scheme, they usually arrive in New Zealand and struggle to find work in hospitals, despite the language improvement scheme they underwent. Many find themselves being forced into taking the role of care givers in homes rather than nurses in hospitals, as hospitals prefer to hire locals, something they were not informed of by the agency.
So comes the question--how do you spot a false scam letter? There are a number of factors that nearly always come into play: there will be a sense of urgency about the proposal. Rick’s acceptance letter came within a week of applying when legitimate conferences usually stew over their decision for a full year. There will be a request for money. There may be grammatical errors, and perhaps a frequent use of capitals. There is a chance that confidentiality is mentioned in the letter. Finally, if the correspondence is mainly written, request a telephone number before you continue.

Blatter won't rule out possibility of rerunning World Cup 2022 vote

(CNN) -- FIFA president Sepp Blatter has refused to rule out the possibility of rerunning the vote for the 2022 World Cup if bribery allegations surrounding the original ballot are proven.
The head of world football revealed at the organization's headquarters in Switzerland on Thursday that FIFA are to interview the whistle blower who made the claims in British newspaper The Sunday Times.
The unidentified source alleged that FIFA members Issa Hayatou and Jacques Anouma received $1.5 million to vote for Qatar, according to evidence that was handed to a British parliamentary inquiry in London. Both men deny the claims.
Mohamed Bin Hammam, who is challenging Blatter for the presidency of FIFA on June 1 and played a key part in securing the tournament for his native Qatar, also denied the accusations.
When asked by reporters if the vote for 2022 could be re-run, the UK Press Association quoted Blatter as saying: "This is an idea circulating already around the world which is alarming.
"We are anxiously awaiting for these evidences or non-evidences in order that we can take the adequate steps. The newspaper has agreed that we will bring this whistle blower here to Zurich and then we will have an investigation of this."
At the same parliamentary inquiry, David Triesman, who was head of England's failed 2018 bid, told politicians that several FIFA members asked for bribes in return for their vote. FIFA subsequently wrote to the FA to ask them for all the evidence they had in relation to the case.
FIFA has already suspended executive members Amos Adamu and Reynald Temarii following accusations of corruption before last December's World Cup ballot.
Russia was awarded the 2018 World Cup after England attracted just two votes and the English Football Association (FA) announced Thursday they would not be voting for either Blatter or Bin Hammam in the upcoming presidential election.
Chairman of the FA, David Bernstein, said in a statement: "The FA Board has today agreed to abstain in the vote for the Presidency of FIFA.
"There are a well-reported range of issues both recent and current which, in the view of The FA board, make it difficult to support either candidate.
"The FA values its relationships with its international football partners extremely highly. We are determined to play an active and influential role through our representation within both UEFA and FIFA.
"We will continue to work hard to bring about any changes we think would benefit all of international football."

Apple triggers 'religious' reaction in fans' brains, report says

(CNN) -- Next time Grandma asks why you're going to the mall on Sunday morning instead of church, tell her you're going to Apple Chapel.
For Apple fans, the brand triggers a reaction in the brain that's not unlike that of religious devotees, according to a BBC documentary series that cites neurological research.
The neuroscientists ran a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test on an Apple fanatic and discovered that images of the technology company's gadgets lit up the same parts of the brain as images of a deity do for religious people, the report says.
The first episode of the documentary shows Apple employees "whipped up into some sort of crazy, evangelical frenzy" at the recent opening of an Apple store in London.
Observers and Apple critics have long accused fans of the tech company of taking their infatuation to an extreme.
People have gone to great lengths to prove their love of Apple with tattoos, bumper stickers and home shrines to outmoded Mac computers. Apple's cult-like following was highlighted in a 2009 documentary called "Macheads."
A blog, aptly titled Cult of Mac, wrote on Thursday about Oakland, California, resident Gary Allen's cross-country pilgrimage to Apple's first store in Virginia to celebrate the retail chain's 10th anniversarythis week.
In speeches, Pope Benedict XVI has said technology consumption poses a threat to religion and the Roman Catholic church. The holy leader told a Palm Sunday crowd last month that technology cannot replace God.
However, apparently it may inspire god-like devotion.

Google awaiting court order before changing Argentina search engine

Buenos Aires, Argentina (CNN) -- Google has not altered its search engine in Argentina despite a court order to do so because the company has not yet received an official order from the court, a spokeswoman said Thursday.
Until Google is served with the injunction, the company will not remove any search results from its search engine or comment on the matter, Victoria Campetella told CNN.
An Argentine court this week granted an injunction that blocks the Internet giant from "suggesting" searches that lead to certain sites that have been deemed anti-Semitic, and removes the sites from the search engine's index.
The injunction, filed by DAIA, an umbrella organization of Argentina's Jewish community, also prohibits Google from advertising on the stated websites.
The injunction names 76 sites that the organization considers "highly discriminatory."
Google's suggested searches are a Google algorithm that offers search terms similar to the one the user appears to be typing in.
"The common denominator on these sites is the incitement of hate and the call to violence," DAIA said in a statement. "In none of these cases are there discussions or criticisms from the academic, technological, political or philosophical perspectives."
"It's a slippery slope. I don't think that the people of Argentina are harmed by the inability to see anti-Semitic content, but I think that the best answer is counter-speech," said Ryan Calo, a researcher at the Stanford Center for Internet and Society.
He noted that Google, faced with anti-Semitic search results in the United States, responded by posting an ad with a link to a statement that includes a link to information from the Anti-Defamation League.
"If you recently used Google to search for the word 'Jew,' you may have seen results that were very disturbing. We assure you that the views expressed by the sites in your results are not in any way endorsed by Google," Google's policy statement says.
It goes on to note that citizens and organizations have urged the company to remove links or adjust search results.
"Although Google reserves the right to address such requests individually, Google views the comprehensiveness of our search results as an extremely important priority," the statement says. "Accordingly, we do not remove a page from our search results simply because its content is unpopular or because we receive complaints concerning it."
Argentina has the largest Jewish population in Latin America. The Jewish community there numbers more than 250,000, with the majority residing in the capital, Buenos Aires.
The court ruling on the injunction notes that restrictions on freedom of speech and censorship are illegal under the Argentine constitution, but also notes that the constitution protects people from discrimination. As such, the judge cited previous cases in Argentina that establish that in some restricted cases, it is permissible to prevent the diffusion of certain publications if they infringe on someone's personal rights.
Judge Carlos Molina Portela concluded that "the terms mentioned (in the lawsuit) as well as the results obtained through 'suggested searches' could be described as discriminatory acts and/or at least, incitement and/or encouragement for discrimination."
According to DAIA, the suggested search complaint focused on 13 terms that led to websites that are anti-Semitic, some of which deny that the Holocaust took place. The group did not disclose the 13 terms in question, nor the names of the websites that were blocked.
In a statement, the group said that by suggesting these websites, Google is "inducing and directing traffic to sites with offensive and illegal content."
In Argentina, there have been previous cases in which individuals have sued to have certain websites removed from Google's index, citing invasion of privacy, said Robert Faris, research director for the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard.
The court actions in Argentina appear to view Google more as a publisher of information than as an intermediary, he said.
"It seems to reflect a misunderstanding of how the Internet works and how search engines work," he said.
Cynthia Wong, director of the Global Internet Freedom Project at the Washington-based Center for Democracy & Technology, said the Argentine court's move was part of a "problematic trend" on the part of many governments.
"At the end of the day, enlisting companies to become greater gatekeepers on content online really does shrink the range of speech that we can access. ... It's dangerous to try to shut down speech, because you don't get that kind of robust public debate about what should or should not be acceptable in a democratic society," she said.
While restrictions on the Internet are usually associated with countries such as China or Iran, it is not uncommon for other nations to try to impose some limits on it.
Thailand, for example, asked Google to remove YouTube videos that showed the Thai king, Bhumibol Adulyadej, with feet near his head. In Thai culture, it's considered extremely offensive for anyone's feet to be near someone's head. A national law bans such representations, and Google agreed not to show such videos within Thailand, although they are still available elsewhere in the world.
Germany bans neo-Nazi content, and Google has agreed to remove such sites from its Google.de search engine in that country. Turkey, meanwhile, blocks YouTube because the company refused to take down all potentially offensive videos about Ataturk, the Turkish political hero.

AT&T removes Android app restrictions

(WIRED) -- After years of restrictions, AT&T will now allow Android smartphone customers to install applications downloaded outside the official Android Market.
The recently launched Samsung Infuse is the first of AT&T's phones capable of installing apps from outside sources, including unofficial app stores or web links, a process called sideloading.
Eventually after some software updates, all AT&T Android smartphones will be capable of sideloading, according to AT&T.
"Over the next few weeks, we will also roll out this capability to existing devices in our base for which an upgrade is possible," an AT&T spokesman said.
The HTC Inspire 4G, Samsung Captivate, HTC Aria and LG Thrive will receive the over-the-air upgrade. AT&T is also working on bringing this upgrade to the Motorola Atrix, although AT&T is waiting on a "future maintenance release" for the Atrix in order to upgrade the phone.
What AT&T isn't saying, however, is that you most likely have Amazon to thank for this.
On March 22, Amazon released its Appstore for Android phones in the form of a standalone app. Those who wanted to access the 3,800 Android applications -- including a new version of Angry Birds -- from Amazon's market were required to download the Amazon Appstore app from Amazon.com.
The problem was, AT&T's phones wouldn't let you do that. Users could only download apps available on the official Android Market, and because of Google's policy of not allowing competing app stores to exist within the Android Market, Amazon's Appstore wasn't allowed in.
AT&T customers unable to access Amazon's Appstore weren't happy, and took to the forums to express frustration.
"Every day, Amazon releases a new app for free," one upsetcustomer wrote on AT&T's own hosted message boards. "We continue to be left in the dark ... Why can't you just allow us to install 3rd party apps on our supposedly 'open' Android devices?"
On the same day as the Amazon Appstore announcement, however, AT&T changed its position.
On March 22, AT&T told Wired.com, "We're working to give our Android customers access to third-party application stores." With the release of the Samsung Infuse this week, AT&T customers will finally have access to sideloaded apps.
Amazon confirmed to Wired.com that it had been in discussion with AT&T prior to the Amazon Appstore launch in March, and that Amazon is currently "working closely with AT&T to help make it as easy as possible for AT&T customers to have access to the Amazon Appstore for Android."
On other non-AT&T Android phones where sideloading is allowed, users must check a box in the application settings menu for the phone "to allow installation of non-Market sources."
After checking the box, a small disclaimer pops up, letting you know it's your fault if you download malware and screw up your phone. AT&T confirmed that a similar process will be available to the five listed AT&T phones in the coming weeks, as well as future AT&T Android phone releases.
According to AT&T, the company wasn't allowing sideloading because of security issues. In an interview with AllThingsDigital,AT&T CTO John Donovan said that "although there was a vocal minority clamoring for such access," the vast majority of AT&T users prefer a secure phone more than one that can access any and every app out there.
"I'm a gigantic new services risk-taker," Donovan told AllThingsDigital. "I'm not at all a risk-taker as it relates to security and privacy."
A security researcher previously told Wired.com that allowing your phone to download apps from unofficial sources required some security compromises.
"As soon as you flip that switch and go away from the Android Market, which is the one place where most people go, then you are putting yourself at some risk," security analyst Charlie Miller told Wired.com in a previous interview.
But with the release of Amazon's Appstore, AT&T seems to be more of a "risk taker" than CTO Donovan let on. Maybe the clout of a multinational online retailer can make a company loosen up a bit, even if it supposedly means being less secure.

Scientists: Oceans, clouds, rain possible on distant planet

Astronomers in France say a rocky planet orbiting a star that's one of our closest galactic neighbors may have all the ingredients to make us earthlings feel right at home.
The planet Gliese 581d, orbiting the red dwarf star Gliese 581 about 20 light years from Earth, could support oceans, clouds and rainfall with a greenhouse effect that would moderate its temperatures, the team of scientists from the Institut Pierre Simon Laplace in Paris says in a study published this month in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
If you're thinking  the Gliese 581 system and possibly habitable planets sound familiar, you're right. Just last year, scientists reported that another planet, Gliese 581g, was a prime candidate to support life.
More recent studies have cast doubt on whether Gliese 581g even exists, although one of the scientists who claimed its discovery, astronomer Steven Vogt of the University of California-Santa Cruz, has defended his work, according to a report on Space.com.
With the 581g debate in mind, the scientists in Paris decided to take another look at 581d, which they note is seven times the size of Earth. When it was discovered in 2007, 581d was thought not to be capable of sustaining life, because it has permanent day and night sides, with the night side too cold for living organisms, and it gets only a third as much energy from its star as Earth gets from the sun.
The Paris scientists used a new atmospheric simulation model to look at 581d. And here's what they found, according to a press release:
"With a dense carbon dioxide atmosphere  a likely scenario on such a large planet  the climate of Gliese 581d is not only stable against collapse, but warm enough to have oceans, clouds and rainfall."
The fact that 581d orbits a red dwarf star makes a big difference, they found.
On Earth, a phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering reflects heat from our sun in the form of blue light back into space. This helps keep Earth from overheating. But as the atmosphere on 581d is absorbing only red light, Rayleigh scattering doesn't come into play.
"This means that (light) can penetrate much deeper into the atmosphere, where it heats the planet effectively due to the greenhouse effect of the CO2 atmosphere," the scientists said in the press release.
Their model also showed "the daylight heating was efficiently redistributed across the planet by the atmosphere, preventing atmospheric collapse on the night side or at the poles," they said.
But don't pack up the spaceship just yet.
"While Gliese 581d may be habitable there are other possibilities; it could have kept some atmospheric hydrogen, like Uranus and Neptune, or the fierce wind from its star during its infancy could even have torn its atmosphere away entirely," the scientists said.
And even if you left now, in a current-technology spaceship, it would take 300,000 years to get to the Gliese system.
So there's plenty of time to figure it out. Or get Capt. James T. Kirk and the starship Enterprise to explore strange new worlds.
